Cover Photo Focus Point

Control exactly which part of your cover photo stays visible when it’s cropped on different screen sizes. Instead of choosing from preset positions, you can drag a focus point to precisely set your focal area.

Your cover photo displays differently depending on screen size and orientation. On mobile, more of the image may be cropped. The focus point tells the browser which part of your image is most important, ensuring that area stays visible regardless of how the cover is cropped.

  1. Open your story in edit mode

  2. Click the Cover Options button in the bottom right of your cover photo

  3. You’ll see a thumbnail preview of your cover photo with a focus picker

  4. Click and drag the circular focus indicator to the most important part of your image

  5. Watch the actual cover photo update in real-time as you drag

  6. Changes are saved automatically

Drag the focus point to the subject’s face. This ensures the face stays visible even on narrow mobile screens where the sides may be cropped.

Focus on the center of the group or the most important person. Avoid placing the focus point too close to edges where someone might get cropped out.

Consider what makes the shot compelling. Focus on the horizon line, a key landmark, or the area with the most visual interest.

If your cover includes text or a logo, place the focus point directly on it to ensure it remains visible.

When you place the focus point near the edge of your image, a subtle zoom effect is automatically applied. This helps keep your focal point more centered in the final crop, preventing important elements from being cut off at the edges.

The zoom increases progressively as you move toward the corners, with the maximum effect at the very edges.

If you’ve moved the focus point and want to start over:

  1. Look for the Reset button next to the info icon in the focus picker

  2. Click it to return the focus to the center of the image (50%, 50%)

  3. The change is saved automatically

The focus point is reset to center whenever you upload a new cover photo. This ensures you always have the opportunity to set the ideal focus for each new image.
