Publish and share language versions

Check the language list in Pre-Publish Check before you publish. A completed translation is a draft until you publish it.

See the complete supported language lists for all 23 automatic translation languages and 82 manual choices.

When a story has never been published, you can start publication from any ready language version. Exposure includes the default version and all completed language drafts that are ready to publish.

  1. Review and save the language drafts.
  2. Select Publish Story.
  3. Read the language list under Pre-Publish Check.
  4. Use Manage Languages if you need to review or fix a version. This closes the publish check and opens the language panel.
  5. Check the subscriber and access options, then select Publish Story Now.

A language needs a title, a cover photo, and a section to be ready. Unfinished copies and translations, and failed translations, stay drafts. If the default version is not ready, publication is blocked.

The language sentence is hidden when English is the only version being published. Other single languages show their name followed by “only.”

If translations are still in progress or have failed, the publish check shows a warning. Wait for them and review the results if you want all languages to publish together.

For a story that has already been published, publishing a non-default version publishes that version. Publishing from the default version also includes completed language drafts that are ready.

When the main language is already published, use Publish all languages below Add languages in Manage Languages. Review the language names in the confirmation, then confirm. Only completed drafts that are ready to publish are included. Unfinished or failed translations stay drafts.

Publishing these versions does not send another email or push notification to subscribers. The publish check does not offer subscriber notification options again for a story that was already published.

If you unpublished the whole story, publish it again from the default version first. Adding a language does not create a separate subscriber announcement for each translation.

Unpublishing the default version removes the whole story and all its language versions from public view. Unpublishing another language removes only that version. Check the language names and flags in the confirmation before you continue.

You can publish the versions again later. This does not send another subscriber announcement.

  1. Open the language version you want someone to review.
  2. Select Share Draft.
  3. Check the language name and flag in the dialog.
  4. Select Copy Link and send that link to your reviewer.

Use the link from Share Draft, rather than copying the editor’s address. Each language draft has its own share link. You can also use Copy Language Link beside a ready draft in Manage Languages.

Anyone with a draft link can read that version and use the language selector to read the other completed language drafts. They cannot edit the story. Do not share the link if those other drafts are not ready for external review.

Drafts do not appear as published stories on your Exposure site. Password-protected stories still require their password.

If a draft link stops working after you change access settings or unpublish the story, open Share Draft again and copy a new link. Unfinished or failed translations cannot be previewed through the reader’s language selector.

On a published story, the selector lists the published languages. In a shared draft preview, it lists completed versions, including drafts. The current language is bold.

On a phone, tap the selector to open the native language list. English shows how many other languages are available. Other versions show Reading in: followed by the language’s own name.

Signed-out readers who open a non-English version also see a short message in that language. Readers who are signed in do not see that message.
