AI Video Cover Captions & WCAG 2.2 Accessibility Updates
We’ve been working hard on accessibility this month. Here’s what’s new.
🎬 AI-Powered Cover Video Captions
Section titled “🎬 AI-Powered Cover Video Captions”Cover videos are beautiful, but they’ve always been invisible to screen readers, until now. Exposure now automatically generates a short, descriptive caption for your looping cover video using AI. The caption is hidden from sighted visitors and only announced to assistive technology, so your story stays visually clean while becoming more inclusive.
How it works:
- Business subscribers with AI enabled: A caption generates automatically when you upload or replace a cover video. You’ll see “Generating caption with AI…” in the Cover Design Options panel, and once it’s ready, it appears in the text field. Edit it, replace it, or leave it as-is.
- Pro Plus subscribers: Type a caption manually in the same field.
- Captions are cleared automatically when you remove or replace the cover video — no stale descriptions left behind.
The same AI toggle that powers your image alt text now covers video captioning too. Find it in Settings → AI Powers, now labeled “AI Alt Text and Video Cover Captioning.”
🔍 WCAG 2.2 Level AA Progress
Section titled “🔍 WCAG 2.2 Level AA Progress”We completed a comprehensive WCAG 2.2 audit and have been steadily working through the results. Here’s what landed in this update:
Navigation & Structure
- Skip navigation links are now present in all layouts, keyboard users can jump straight to main content
- Proper main landmarks replace generic div wrappers, so screen readers can locate content faster
- Better heading hierarchy across story pages, settings, and public views
Keyboard & Focus
- Improved focus management for subscribe modals, warning dialogs, and the photo lightbox
- Menus announce their state — screen readers now hear when a menu is expanded or collapsed
- Focus return works correctly when closing dialogs and popovers
Media & Content
- Zoom is no longer blocked on embed pages (removed
user-scalable=no) - Better alt text fallbacks for decorative images and cover photos
- Disambiguated links, screen readers can now distinguish between similarly-labeled links
We’ve also published a WCAG 2.2 AA Conformance Report (VPAT) and updated our Accessibility Commitment to reflect these changes.
These improvements are live for all plans. AI video captions are available on Business plans with AI enabled.
