# How Exposure uses AI

Source: https://support.exposure.co/en/articles/how-exposure-uses-ai/

Exposure uses AI for a small number of tasks. Most of them make your stories more accessible to people who use screen readers. This page tells you each task, what goes to the AI, and how you control it.

## What AI does in Exposure

<table><thead><tr><th scope="col">Task</th><th scope="col">Plans</th><th scope="col">What goes to the AI</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><b>Alt text (alt tags) for photos.</b> A short description of each photo, for screen readers and search engines.</td><td>Pro, Pro Plus, and free trials</td><td>The photo, and text from the story: the story title, the section title, and the photo caption</td></tr><tr><td><b>Detailed alt text for photos.</b> A longer description of each photo.</td><td>Business</td><td>The photo, and the same text from the story</td></tr><tr><td><b>Captions for looping cover videos.</b> Screen readers read the caption. Visitors do not see it.</td><td>Business</td><td>The cover video and the story title</td></tr></tbody></table>

AI describes photos and cover videos when you upload them. It does not change your older photos. If you would like your account backfilled, [please let us know!](<https://exposure.co/contact>)

For alt text, see [Add alt text descriptions to story photos](<https://support.exposure.co/en/articles/4150846-add-alt-text-descriptions-to-story-photos/>). For cover video captions, see [Exposure’s accessibility commitment](<https://support.exposure.co/en/articles/13382078-exposure-s-accessibility-commitment/>).

## What AI does not do

- AI does not make or change your photos and videos.

- AI does not write or change your stories or your photo captions.

- AI never replaces alt text that you write, edit, or clear. It also never replaces alt text that comes from your photo files.

- Your photos, videos, and text are not used to train AI models.

## Where your photos and text go

Exposure sends AI requests through OpenRouter, an AI model gateway.

- **Only providers that do not keep your data.** OpenRouter sends the requests only to zero-data-retention endpoints on Google Cloud Vertex AI. Short alt text can also go to zero-data-retention endpoints on Amazon Bedrock. These providers do not store the content of the requests.

- **No AI training.** These providers may not use your photos, videos, or text to train AI models.

- **No other providers.** If none of these endpoints is available, Exposure does not send the request to another provider. The AI text comes later or not at all.

- **Data processors.** OpenRouter, Google, and Amazon Web Services process your content for us, on our instructions.

Exposure stores the text that AI writes with your story, on our servers.

If your photo file already has alt text and metadata import is on, Exposure uses that text and does not send the photo to AI. See [Import captions from photo metadata](<https://support.exposure.co/en/articles/13281497-import-captions-from-photo-metadata/>).

## How you control AI

- **Turn it off.** Go to **Settings → AI Powers** and turn off automatic alt text. Exposure then stops sending your photos and cover videos for AI descriptions. Text that AI already wrote stays until you edit or delete it.

- **Check and edit.** The story editor tells you which alt text AI wrote. You can edit it or clear it at any time.

- **Delete all AI alt text.** In **Settings → AI Powers**, use **Delete AI alt text** to remove the alt text that AI wrote on all your photos.

- **Ask us.** To ask what AI processed for your account, or to ask us to delete AI text, use the [Exposure contact form](<https://exposure.co/contact>).
